I have learned a lot about how to structure presentations and speeches more clearly and effectively. I will treasure your useful detailed feedback. Your guidance on how to address an audience and engage confidently in discussions has been particularly valuable.”

I have a unique background as a communications skills coach: barrister (5 years), Advocacy trainer for lawyers (17 years) and judge (22 years). I am both an educationalist and a practitioner.

As an educationalist, I was Course Director for the Bar Vocational Course at Nottingham Law School where I developed and taught oral Advocacy and written Drafting training programmes. I taught Advocacy for BPP University in London and Birmingham. I am a NITA (National Institute of Trial Advocacy) accredited trainer. I continue to run a course in Public Speaking for an American University in Oxford. I have observed the transformation that comes about in a person when they learn to express a point of view clearly and to articulate an argument persuasively.

My professional background enables me to engage with professionals, academics and business people who are working under pressure and where the stakes are high.  I know how to help my clients communicate complex information clearly. I know how to train a person to be more persuasive (without being coercive). Crucially, I train clients to be both persuasive and ethical.

I set up Articulate Oxford to help people from all walks of life to find their voices in public spaces.

WHAT I DO

The core offer

Articulate Oxford will help you find your authentic, professional voice in a public space. Whether you have a speech or presentation to prepare for, or you want to improve your communication skills generally, Articulate Oxford can help you.

The aim is that public speaking, communication and persuasion become a rewarding and productive part of your professional life.

A bespoke service

An initial discussion will identify your needs and requirements. The number and scope of sessions will be agreed with you. You will receive a coaching programme that is uniquely tailored for you and which allows you to develop your communication skills in a safe space.

Help with managing nerves

If you struggle to manage your nerves, you will receive coaching in how to develop a helpful mindset and you will be given practical coping strategies.

Using structure to achieve clarity and impact

How you organise your thoughts and material determines how well your audience understands what you say. If this is something you struggle with, you will be taught techniques for making clear points and supporting your arguments.

Coaching in written drafting (without relying on AI!) is also offered.

Development of persuasive skills

Drawing on experience of the courtroom, you will be taught how to be persuasive and how to communicate authoritatively.

“Toolkits” for the unexpected

This is for those situations when you are asked to speak with little notice or when you face a sceptical or even a hostile audience.

Tailored feedback

In every session you will practise presenting and you will receive constructive and specific feedback. This will be followed up by written feedback. You will improve incrementally without feeling overwhelmed.

Continued learning

As a former client you will receive a monthly Newsletter containing advice and guidance as well as additional Updates.

METHOD

My approach

Line drawing of a page, pen and coffee cup.
Line drawing of a page, pen and coffee cup.

Many able and successful people struggle with public speaking and avoid the speaking opportunities that come their way.

Many people wish they could communicate more effectively. Often, formal education has not prepared us fully for effective oral communication in the workplace.

This can hold you back.

Public speaking and communication skills can be taught with tailored coaching, practice, targeted feedback and encouragement. It is possible to learn to manage nerves.

This is what Articulate Oxford does.

My approach

Effective communication and speaking are a public service.

Stepping up to the podium or speaking at a meeting is not about placing yourself “in the limelight”.

Public speaking should be audience-focussed. You become the “helpful guide”.

Content should be well-researched and truthful.

At Articulate Oxford the aim is to develop unselfish, ethical speakers who seek to make the world a better place in the way that they communicate.

QUESTIONS

Need Help?

If you are unsure whether coaching is right for you, or you have a specific presentation, interview or speaking opportunity in mind, please get in touch. Tessa will be happy to discuss what you need and suggest the best way forward.

I do not have a speech that I need to prepare for – should I wait until I have one in the diary before making contact?

I have a presentation coming up later in the year – when should I start preparing for it and having coaching?

Help! I have been asked to present at a conference next week in place of a colleague. Is it too late to have coaching?

Do you help with interview preparation?

Do you help with written communication skills?

What does it cost?

There are lots of webinars on public speaking out there – why would I need one-to-one coaching?

There are speaking clubs available – should I go to those?

Where does coaching take place?

Is there any preparation?

I am nervous about the thought of public speaking and nervous about even committing to coaching. Maybe I should just avoid opportunities to speak publicly within my work?
